Attributes of God From A-Z: The Comforter

Updated: Jun 21, 2023

It's hard to believe that the fourth installment of the Attributes of God from A-Z is finally in this blog's wake. I hope you have found the other Attributes of God posts enlightening and fulfilling. If you haven't done so already, stop by the blog feed and read The A-Z Alphabet Attributes of God, The A-Z Alphabet Attributes of God: Letter A, and The A-Z Alphabet Attributes of God: Letter B. This post will focus on the comforter attribute.

Great Comforter

The name "comforter" comes from the Greek word "paracletos," meaning "advocate." The meaning is literally, "summoned to the side of another." Jesus told the disciples that He must go to the Father. Therefore, the Holy Spirt would come reside in them after Pentecost. The meaning of this word is in a legal sense to defend, or plead the case for. Jesus and the Holy Spirit are the defenders and comforters.

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God." (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).

Soul Advocate

Some verses that use the name comforter are below.

  • John 14:16

  • Romans 8:27

  • John 14:26

  • Romans 8:34

  • John 15:26

  • Isaiah 51:12

  • John 16:7

Many other verses contain "paracletos." The Greek twin word, "Parakletos," as referenced in 1 John 2:1, is used to define Christ as an advocate with the Father.

"if any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous." (1 John 2:1, ESV).
