Alphabetical Attributes of God: Honorable Lord

Updated: Jun 21, 2023

The Alphabetical Attributes of God series has been active for a few weeks now and it isn't quite halfway through yet. It's exciting to see how with each letter, God's character is discovered on a deeper level.

"If we speak of God’s “traits” or “characteristics” or “qualities” we might leave the impression that God consists of so many parts that are, then, more basic than God himself. And so language becomes difficult. But recalling the “simplicity” of God – that God is one in essence; there are no divisions within his nature or being; he does not consist of so many parts – we still want to understand all that he has revealed himself to be. A divine attribute is, then, something we can affirm about God to be true, some aspect of his being and character" (The Gospel Coalition Inc, "The Attributes of God: a Survey of Biblical and Theological Material on Ten of God's Attributes." Zaspel, Fred).

This Alphabetical Attributes of God post will describe the honorable aspect of God and why He is worthy of praise alone.

Worthy of Honor

The word "honorable" comes from the Hebrew translation of "kabhedh," meaning "to be heavy, weighty." In the Old Testament, it is used in several pretenses as seen in the below examples.

  • Psalm 111:3: describing God's infinite power and righteousness

  • Isaiah 42:21: retrospecting how the Law of God is honorable as with His precepts

In the New Testament, there are several Greek words used to describe "honorable," depending on the context the word is being used. For more insight on this, visit Bible Hub in their article "Honorable."

God is worthy of honor because unlike humans, He is always perfect, righteous, and faithful and never changes. He formed humans and created every living thing.

He created humans in His image, built to praise Him. They have three parts (body, mind, soul) that represent the Trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) and with a conscience that bears witness to what is right and holy moralistically. A more detailed free study on the three parts is offered through Life Levels below.

Studying the Creator

"This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.” The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day" (John 6:50-54, ESV).

The Gospel Coalition makes another interesting point. There is mentioned in scripture the command to "be holy for God is holy" (Leviticus 19:2, 1 Peter 1:6) and to be loving because God is loving (1 John 3:16, 1 Corinthians 13). What is not mentioned is to be omnipresent or self-existent because God is omnipresent and self-existent. Exhibiting this behavior, however, is part of the fall and the result of negative human pride for anything apart from God is sin.

Pride, with any sin, resulted in God's punishment several times in scripture as seen with the fall of Lucifer, the fall of man, the Tower of Babel, the Israelites, and their enemies. God makes certain attributes learnable, or communicable, and certain attributes incommunicable so we do not fall in temptation to assert to His level for He alone is honorable in complete holiness.

Lending a Hand

The numbers of the victims of human trafficking and the stories behind the numbers are why Blissful Faith is partnering with nonprofit organizations to help fund rescues and recovery programs for those entrapped in bondage. Each number is a person. You can be the one to help make a difference by purchasing a shirt (coming soon to the blog in a few weeks) or by ordering a downloadable product currently in the store, in which proceeds will go to nonprofits that seek to give a voice to the voiceless. See more on human trafficking from my previous articles below:

  • The Price of Freedom

  • Knowing Freedom

Blissful Faith started as a lifestyle and branched into a blog to help others hear about Jesus Christ and how they too can develop a blissful faith through knowing God. This blog’s purpose is to be an evangelical outreach to further the kingdom of Christ. Furthering the kingdom means stretching outside of the comfort zone, comprehending and working towards meeting the needs of others. Putting faith to action keeps it from becoming stagnant.

Blissful Faith Merchandise

The Blissful Faith Merchandise store helps both this blog to grow and to meet the needs of others. About 8-10% of the proceeds will go to The Exodus Road and Agape International Missions to help combat human trafficking. The funds will help assist in rescue operations, providing shelter, and recovery programs to those in bondage.
