Attributes of God to Praise From A to Z: Name Above All Names

Updated: May 1

It's hard to believe we are more than half way through the Attributes of God series already. This series has helped me to grow further in my walk with Christ and I hope it has been a similar ride for those reading and staying up to date on the series. It's truly amazing how much God allows His attributes to be studied, while not all the attributes are communicable.."

Attributes of God to Praise from A-Z: Name Above All Names

"Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father" (Philippians 2:9-11, ESV).

In Jewish culture, the name Yahweh (YHWH) is regarded as sacred and Jews do no speak it. In the Western culture, God's name has become merely a word used in disgust and vain, placed at the beginning of a curse to someone else. There is a stark contrast between the two worlds. the Bible illuminates the grave importance of God's name and how it is above every name and is to be exalted above the rulers of this world.

God's name is used to emphasize the importance He alone holds.

  • Salvation (see Acts 4:12)

  • Baptism (to be done after conversion not before. See Matthew 28)

  • Complete authority over all creation (see Matthew 28:18)

  • Worship (see Philippians 2:10)

  • Creation (God is the only one that can speak things into existence. See Colossians 1:16)

There are many more points to emphasize here, but there is not space nor time to list them completely. That is how intricate the nature of God is. We alone can only fathom a small fraction of who God is.

Supporting Contextual Evidence for the Attributes of God to Praise from A-Z

"For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily" (Colossians 2:9, ESV)

The power behind God's name makes even the demons tremble: "You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!" (James 2:19, ESV).

It's interesting how even the demons believe in God, yet there are thousands (possibly millions) of humans who deny His existence. Yet, it is not the lack of historical or scientific evidence/data that this conclusion is drawn. It is the confidence in a world view that is based upon faulty practices and the reliance upon the Evolution Theory that doesn't even meet the scientific process. It is the sole reliance upon a theory that can't be tested or applied. It is the reliance on self. Yet, God's very nature can be studied. It's a remarkable concept, really.

God's nature is seen in more forms than one.

  • the atonement for sin (see John 3:16, Romans 5:12-21)

  • how creation functions (see Matthew 6:26, Psalm 50:6, Job 12:7-10)

  • the wrath of God on sin (Romans.1:18-20)

  • man being made in the image of God, complete with three divisions of mind, body, and soul representing the Trinity (Genesis 1:27)

  • God not being limited to a mere temple (Acts 17:22-31)

There are still so many more examples.
