As promised, here is the next installment of The Attributes of God. This post will be focused on the name, Adonai for the letter A. With each post, there will be one word to describe the living God.
What's In a Name?
Adonai means "sovereignty" in Hebrew. The phrase alone is used over 288 times in the Bible. It is the plural form of "adon" which means "Lord." It's importance recognizes God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This name exemplifies God's right to be called Lord. He is all-consuming and all-present.
When Jesus was on Earth, he was perfoming miracles in one location while performing miracles simultaneously in another. God showcases the workings of the trinity flawlessly. Take a look at these versus.
"And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years, but no one could heal her. She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak, and immediately her bleeding stopped. 'Who touched me?' Jesus asked. When they denied it, Peter said, "Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.' But Jesus said, 'Someone touched me; I know that power has gone out from me." Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet." Luke 8:43-47.
Did you catch that? Luke specifically wrote this in a way to underline the workings of the trinity and to emphasize the nature of Jesus' question. Jesus knew who had touched him. Likewise, He asked a similar question in Eden in Genesis when Adam and Eve had sinned and hid from God. God called to Adam asking where he was. God knew where they were, but he was waiting for Adam to acknowledge this point. Luke emphasizes that no one can escape God unnoticed for he is all-present.
From "are you able?" to "I believe"
"Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.
'Unless you people see signs and wonders,' Jesus told him, 'you will never believe.' The royal official replied, 'Sir, come down before my child dies.' 'Go,' Jesus replied, 'your son will live.' The man took Jesus at his word and departed. While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, 'Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.' Then the father realized that his was the exact time at Which Jesus said to him, 'Your son will live.'" John 4:46-53.
These verses are very important for two reasons: they show that Jesus was in two separate places at once and the Holy Spirit also was working here. As soon as Jesus spoke it, the official's son was healed. There's a lesson that can be very moving to apply in our own lives, myself included. Pray with honest prayer instead of polite prayer. Polite prayer questions if God is able. When we ask in faith, it will be done if it is within the Father's will.
